Algae Bloom Impacting Juvenile Lobster Habitat in Florida Bay

With lobster season upon us, the persistent algae blooms in Florida Bay could threaten the state's largest lobster nursery and the economy it supports by wiping out the sponges and seagrasses vital to the survival of juvenile lobsters. "Young lobsters depend on sponges for shelter." said Peter Frezza, a biologist with Audubon of Florida. "These dense algae blooms, which we've been seeing in Florida Bay now for over two years, clog the filtering mechanism in sponges, basically choking them to death. It's not pretty."
