President Obama has released his FY 2015 budget request, including $74 million for Everglades projects in the Army Corps Civil Works budget.

Audubon is encouraged to see the inclusion of funding for the Indian River Lagoon South C-44 reservoir. This project will decrease damaging flows of water into the St. Lucie estuary and southern Indian River Lagoon. During last year’s Indian River Lagoon crisis, the importance of this project to improve the ecosystem and the economy of this area was in the spotlight. Audubon applauds advocates around the state and Rep. Patrick Murphy for fighting for this important project.

Funding for the Picayune Strand restoration project is also included in the President's request. This is the biggest single habitat restoration component of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan and an Audubon priority.

Unfortunately, the budget lacks funding to finish Kissimmee River Restoration. This important project, which is 85% finished, will store water in the Northern Everglades and restore miles of wetland habitats. It is the fastest and most effective way to help coastal estuaries and the Northern Everglades. Audubon has been pushing state and federal partners to resolve outstanding cost-share issues and finish this crown jewel of restoration.

Floridians deserve to see this key project completed.”
