MIAMI (March 27, 2018) - The Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA) storage reservoir cleared another milestone yesterday when the project was submitted to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers by the South Florida Water Management District. The plan advances the EAA Reservoir as directed in Senate Bill 10 (2017), Audubon's top legislative priority last year. Audubon commends the District and Florida Department of Environmental Protection for developing a project that sends clean freshwater to the Southern Everglades and reduces damaging discharges from Lake Okeechobee to coastal estuaries, while meeting aggressive planning deadlines.

"The EAA Reservoir is one step closer to becoming a reality,” said Julie Wraithmell, Audubon Florida's interim executive director. "With a tentatively selected plan in hand that sends needed clean water south, we urge the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to make reviewing this project a top priority."

Before being submitted to Congress for authorization, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers must approve the Tentatively Selected Plan and determine that it complies with federal law. Congressional authorization is necessary to make the project eligible for federal funding.
