Northeast Florida’s wealth of wildlife ranges from maritime hammocks decorated with jewel-toned Painted Buntings, to thousand-fold flocks of migrating Red Knots foraging on coastal flats to Wood Storks bringing up their young in the wetlands of the mighty St. Johns River.

Audubon takes action on behalf of these resources through its Northeast Florida Program. Find out how we’re making a difference—and how you can get involved today.

Northeast Florida Projects

As in all our regions, Audubon organizes its policy work in Northeast Florida around five core issues.

Wildlife Conservation:
Working with federal, state and local government partners to protect the globally significant shorebird resources in Jacksonville’s Nassau Sound and Ft. George Inlet. Read about the migration of Red Knots in the Jacksonville Times-Union
here.

Land Acquisition & Management:
Advocating for the renewal of the state’s conservation land-buying program, Florida Forever, and the acquisition of Northeast Florida’s remaining wild places. View Northeast Florida’s proposed Florida Forever acquisitions
here.

Water Quality and Quantity:
Supporting legislative efforts that resulted in a $12M special appropriation in 2007-2008 for Lower St. Johns River restoration.

Growth Management & Transportation:
Engaging in the comprehensive planning process on county and city levels to advocate for wise coastal management and innovative land use patterns that preserve natural areas. View a schedule of Northeast Florida’s county and city Evaluation and Appraisal Reports (EAR) for comprehensive planning
here.

Climate Change:
Supporting the development of local leaders to help move Northeast Florida from awareness to action in the fight against global warming.
