Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary Boardwalk

The world famous boardwalk.

Welcome to Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary and the Blair Audubon Center in the Heart of the Western Everglades

Audubon’s Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a 14,000 acre preserve located near Naples, Florida in the heart of the Western Everglades. It is home to the largest remaining stand of old growth Bald Cypress forest in North America. A 2.25 mile boardwalk trail, which winds its way through 4 native habitats, is open to the public 365 days a year.

Audubon’s involvement with the Sanctuary began over 100 years ago in a national campaign to protect wading birds. In 1954, National Audubon Society acquired the Corkscrew property, which is now considered the “jewel in the Audubon crown.” Over 100,000 visitors from around the world flock to the Sanctuary annually to view native wildlife and habitats, which represent the Florida landscape as it has been for hundreds of years.

Wildlife is abundant at Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary and easily viewed from the raised wooden boardwalk trail:

  • More than 200 species of birds are residents or migratory visitors
  • Endangered and threatened species here include: American Alligator (federally listed as threatened), Wood Stork, Bald Eagle, Roseate Spoonbill, Limpkin, Florida Black Bear and Florida Panther, the Ghost Orchid and various native orchids and bromeliads.
