Audubon commends the U.S. Department of Interior (DOI) for today's decision to list four snake species as “injurious” under the Lacey Act. This event builds off of DOI’s listing of four python species in 2012.

"Almost everyone knows about the challenge to combat Burmese pythons in the Everglades," said Julie Hill-Gabriel, Audubon's Director of Everglades Policy. "Today’s act helps to make sure that populations of these four other large constrictors never become established in the Everglades.”

Import and interstate sale of the reticulated python, DeSchauensee's anaconda, green anaconda and Beni anaconda will now be prohibited.

Threatened and endangered species, including the iconic Wood Stork, are being predated by large constrictors. To combat this problem, prevention tools must be paired with comprehensive multi-agency eradication strategies.
