Mid-Winter Shorebird Survey: February 3-6, 2012

The Mid-Winter Shorebird Survey dates have been set for February 3-6 2012, with Friday February 3 as the main target date!

The survey’s primary objective is to develop an understanding of the winter distribution of shorebirds in Florida. Our warm weather makes our coastline appealing to an abundance of wintering shorebirds not seen in other states. Conducted annually, this survey will enable us to recognize long-term trends or changes in winter population sizes and distribution, and identify key wintering sites - information that is much needed to guide future conservation efforts.

Started in the Northeast Florida, the survey is expanding statewide and is done in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Audubon volunteers like you are the key to the survey’s success. You bring the shorebird identification skills, the experience and the equipment needed to complement agencies and land managers efforts.

At this point, please consider participating in the survey and ask your members with good shorebirds identifications knowledge to lead a surveying team. Check back to this website for regional coordinators contact information as well as surveys protocol. Thanks for your help!
