Are the Sugar Lands Headed for an Economy vs. Environment Battle?

Environmental and economic priorities are coming to a head over Everglades restoration. The leading fighters for each side: Governor Charlie Crist and Florida Crystals, respectively. Gov. Crist's plan to buy out U.S. Sugar, a rival of Florida Crystals, and restore sugarcane fields to sawgrass is coming into direct conflict with Florida Crystals' business interests. Florida Crystals wants to increase its industrial shadow in the area and diversify its production. Much of this expansion would take place in and near Okeelenta, FL. And while it is true that Crystals' plans could bolster the rural region's economy, they would also heavily dampen Crist's iniatives aimed at Everglades restoration.
