Audubon Urges Florida House to Approve Renewable Energy Standard

In a presentation before the House Energy Committee Audubon Policy Director Eric Draper urged approval of a rule that would require 20% of energy to come from renewable sources.  The rule, called a Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS), was drafted by the Public Service Commission and requires legislative approval.

Audubon’s Draper argued that the rule is modest and follows the criteria set out by the Legislature in HB 7135 that passed last year.  “If the goal is to reduce greenhouse gases, increase energy diversity and stimulate the economy, the proposed RPS does that,” Draper said.  “The rule is not perfect, it needs stronger compliance and enforcement, but it is a good, if modest start.”
