Drill On This

Tallahassee writer and Leon County Commissioner, Bob Rackleff, drills down to the heart of the oil drilling issue by asking some important questions. First off, who are the companies and/or entities behind the oil drilling push in Florida? Who or what exactly is behind Florida Energy Associates, a limited liability organization fronted by a single individual's name, Doug Daniels. And what about the oil lobby's claims? Mr. Rackleff tackles them head on. For starters, there is no evidence that there exists massive quantities of oil reserves in the Eastern Gulf. He points out that the SEC, for their accounting purposes, quantifies the Eastern Gulf reserves as zero. He also debunks the notion that oil drilling could be done soon and relatively cheaply. It would take over a decade for any sizeable production and a considerable outlay, a good portion footed by the state. Perhaps most dishearteningly of all, Mr. Rackleff destroys the fairy tale for us of a world filled with cheaper gasoline. He hates to say it, but based on oil markets and supply and demand dictates, drilling in Florida's waters would have a negligible effect on gas prices. So if consumers don't win, who does? Oh right, the oil industry and their lobby. What the taxpayer gets is the bill to clean up and mitigate any environmental damages that accrue in the process of oil men making a cheap and easy buck on our natural resources and at our expense. And the one thing that would be guaranteed in this deal is environmental damage; lots of it. Read Rackleff's extensive and engaging article.
