Everglades Restoration Means More Birds

It is hard to argue with the benefits of Everglades Restoration when you see the results first hand. The Glades-Hendry Audubon chapter is seeing just that at Stormwater Treatment Area (STA) 5 in the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA). The remarkable convergence of birds at this site heralds the possibility of more great things to come if the South Florida Water Management District is allowed to complete Governor Crist’s proposed purchase of 180,000 acres of U.S. Sugar land in the EAA. Converting those lands to more STAs, water storage areas, and other Everglades Restoration projects will attract more wildlife – potentially replacing farming with one of the greatest ecotourism sites anywhere.
