Injunction Lifted for Bridge to Restoration

The preliminary injunction entered this fall by a federal district court which delayed construction of a one mile bridge on Tamiami Trail has been lifted.  Although Audubon’s request to participate in the case to the project was denied, we are thrilled with the court’s decision.  This important and foundational restoration project can now move forward, restoring water to NE Shark River Slough, the historic heart of flow into Everglades National Park, on which wildlife depend.  Raising Tamiami Trail is also one of the most critical projects for responding to sea level rise and other serious impacts from climate change.

It has been twenty years since Congress recognized the need for recreating natural flows into Everglades National Park and authorized the Modified Water Deliveries project.  Hand in hand with the one mile bridge is an effort to construct additional bridges being planned by the National Park Service.  Audubon will continue its efforts to see that the Modified Water Deliveries project is finally completed and Tamiami Trail raised to achieve true restoration and bring back the abundance of wildlife that once flourished in the southern Everglades.
