October 16th - Fishing Line Cleanup Day in Tampa Bay

On Saturday, October 16th, Tampa Bay Watch and Audubon of Florida's Coastal Island Sanctuaries will be hosting the 17th annual Monofilament Line Cleanup Day.  Over the year, thousands of feet of fishing line wind up tangled in Tampa Bay's colonial bird nesting islands, killing hundreds of birds.

Each October, when the birds are not nesting, volunteers from around Florida come together to help keep our coastal bird populations healthy and increase their chance for survival.   All recovered fishing line is then recycled.

From tbo.com:

"Our annual clean up mobilizes the people who love and use the bay the most to help us clear important nesting habitat of dangerous fishing line." said Ann Hodgson, Audubon's Gulf Coast Research Director. "This event is a great way for folks to be good stewards of Tampa Bay, and save a lot of birds in the process."
