An inconvenience for some equates to progress for South Florida. If you happened to be one of the unlucky people taking Tamiami Trail between 3:30 and 4:00am, the trip probably ended in a U-Turn.
The bridging of Tamiami Trail for the Everglades has progressed to the extent that the road was completely closed for the first time. The construction is scheduled to be complete late in 2013. Once built and operated, the one mile bridge under construction will reconnect the natural flow of the Everglades. The next phase of bridging must remain a priority for full restoration.
“As efforts to restore the Everglades gained momentum in recent years, construction on this one-mile bridge project began in December of 2009. In December of 2011, President Obama signed legislation authorizing construction of an additional 5.5 miles of bridge. Conservation groups including the Audubon Society, Sierra Club, and World Wildlife Fund are calling the entire proposed 6.5-mile bridge the Everglades Skyway.”
