St. Johns County Audubon Bird Stewards Linda and Carmen Martino Report From Mantanzas Inlet!

As a result of the efforts of the Audubon of Florida's Northeast program, St. Johns County Audubon and local volunteers, beach driving was temporarily suspended on certain sections of the beach at Matanzas Inlet to allow for nesting Wilson's Plovers to take their chicks to the water's edge to feed. Linda shares her observations:

"How hot was it today on beach patrol at Matanzas Inlet?  Very hot."

"Well the Wilson's Plovers found a good solution. We saw six at one time in a reasonably small area. Five had picked out their own shade spot under a sign and the sixth was running around looking for its own sign and shade.

It was a stitch as the five signs were in a row - each with one Wilson's Plover. I could not tell if any were chicks now the size of adults or all were adults. The sun was pretty bad and in the shade details were not good. But I've not seen so many in one small area before and it was cute to see them sit for a change. They sure know what area is protected."
