On September 22nd last year there was a public hearing in Tarpon Springs regarding Wal-Mart's plan to build a supercenter along the Alcote River.  The public was encouraged to attend the meeting and while many people attended the meeting, Wal-Mart had used up all of the time and no public comment was taken that evening.  Public comment was then rescheduled for October 16th.  Between October 2nd and October 13th Audubon of Florida Eagle Watch Volunteers, Barb Walker and Joe Zarolinski located, and had FWC confirm, an active bald eagle nest on the property.  The nest was verified and issued PI950 as the ID.  The nest is in a live pine along the Anclote River.  PI950 fledged two eaglets this year.  Site visits have taken place every other Monday and every Tuesday morning.

The St. Pete Times mentions that Tarpon Springs is working on an ordinance to protect bald eagle habitat.  The super center's previous site plans called for a parking lot where an active bald eagle's nest is located.  Audubon of Florida Eagle Watchers monitoring the site discovered the nest in early October of last year and worked with FWC for verification and assignment.
