What the well-dressed piping plover is wearing this year.

Florida provides vital wintering habitat for threatened and endangered Piping Plovers, and band resighting studies are helping to better understand the role Florida plays in their survival. Biologists trying to get a handle on these birds' movements mark some individuals with a series of color bands whose unique combination helps them identify individuals throughout their lifetimes. This Piping Plover, resighted in Navarre Beach in the Florida Panhandle on November 1, was initially banded on its breeding grounds near near St. Ignace, Michigan.  So next time you see a plover wearing jewelry, carefully note the color and order of its bands so you can report it... or better yet, take a picture! Your band reports can help wildlife managers better understand-- and conserve-- Piping Plovers.
