For over 100 years, waterbirds and birds of prey have received much of Audubon’s attention in Florida, and as a result, Audubon has a nationally recognized expertise with these two groups of birds. The bird conservation work we are doing, for example with spoonbills, reddish egrets and storks, is exemplary; in fact all three of these species have increased in Florida as a result of the special conservation efforts on their behalf. But as I think about my new responsibilities as “Director of Bird Conservation” for Audubon of Florida, my own experience living in the Redland farming district in southern Miami-Dade County opens up a whole new list of questions about the big bird conservation issues we face.
