Miami, FL (April 7, 2016) - Audubon Florida cheered Governor Rick Scott’s signing of House Bill 989, known as the Legacy Florida Act. This law dedicates 25 percent or up to $200 million a year of net proceeds from Amendment 1 funding for Everglades projects, another $50 million for projects to restore and preserve Florida’s springs, and $5 million for Lake Apopka. Today (April 7) is known as “Everglades Day,” as designated by the Florida Legislature in honor of Marjory Stoneman Douglas’ birthday.

“Legacy Florida is part of what voters had in mind when approving Amendment 1  last year,” said Eric Draper, Audubon Florida’s Executive Director. “The crises in Florida’s coastal waters requires a dedicated source of funding over many years. This commitment to dedicated funding for the Everglades and other water resources makes this an extra special Everglades Day.”
