Audubon hosted the Purple Martin exhibit in partnership with Disney. Volunteers and staff were available on weekends to visit with guests and educate visitors about Purple Martins and Audubon.
Martins are an important part of the food chain because of the amount of insects they consume. In the past it was thought they mostly ate mosquitoes, however, this has been found not to be true. They will eat mosquitoes, moths, wasps, flies, dragonflies and many other insects and insect pests.
There are many places in the United States where Purple Martins are monitored by people. Disney is an important nesting site for Purple Martins, where careful records are kept on their migration and how many chicks hatch each year.
Many visitors get the opportunity to see firsthand how these birds raise their young. The continuing work of organizations such as Audubon and Disney is important for bird conservation and helps ensure that they will be with us for many years to come.
