MIAMI (January 4, 2018) - In response to the Trump Administration’s announcement to consider opening Florida’s offshore waters to oil and gas drilling, Audubon Florida Interim Executive Director Julie Wraithmell slammed the move saying:
“Floridians remember all-too-well the destruction of Deepwater Horizon, which devastated our economy and our coasts. Audubon Florida strongly opposes drilling for oil and gas off of Florida’s coasts. Gambling with tourism, Florida’s No. 1 industry, and risking the lives of our birds and wildlife are only a few of the dangerous risks of offshore drilling. This short-sighted decision endangers our coastal communities and iconic species like the Brown Pelican. We are encouraged by the opposition to drilling off of Florida’s coasts by Gov. Scott, Sens. Nelson and Rubio, and some in Florida’s congressional delegation.”
