When does wildlife photography become conservation photography? The best nature photography doesn’t just capture the imagination—the images both educate the viewer and inspire action. Hear from three photographers leading the charge to use nature photography for conservation, harnessing the power of the lens to create change for birds and wildlife.

Kirsten Hines is a Florida-based author, wildlife photographer, and conservationist with a master’s degree in biology and a background as an environmental educator. Her writing and photography have appeared in various publications, including several of her own books, such as Attracting Birds to South Florida Gardens, a pictorial history of Everglades National Park, and soon to come, Wild Florida: An Animal Odyssey. Kirsten aims to inspire conservation action through her story-telling, wildlife-oriented presentations, guiding and workshops, and through not-for-profit work such as co-founding Phoebes Birding to connect women through nature and serving on such boards as Tropical Audubon Society and Audubon Florida, where she serves as Conservation Chair.

National Geographic Explorer Gabby Salazar, PhD, is a conservation photographer and an environmental social scientist. In 2021, Gabby won the Emerging Photographer Award by the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA). She is an Associate Fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers and a Past President of NANPA. She has a Masters in Conservation Science from Imperial College London and a PhD from the University of Florida, where she studied how environmental images influence human attitudes and behaviors. Gabby is committed to environmental and science education and is the co-author of the book No Boundaries: 25 Women Explorers and Scientists Share Adventures, Inspiration, and Advice, published by National Geographic Kids Books.

Preeti Desai is National Audubon Society’s senior director of social media and storytelling and a judge in Audubon’s annual photography awards. She leads the effort to help birds and the places they need by telling Audubon's story across a contemporary social media ecosystem. This includes setting the social media vision and strategy for the nonprofit's conservation, advocacy, and engagement efforts, as well as acting as a resource for Audubon’s nationwide network of chapters, centers, and regional offices. Preeti uses conservation photography every day to achieve Audubon’s mission.
