Make Your Time at the Beach Count

Become a bird steward with St. Johns County Beach-nesting Bird Network to help protect chicks and eggs. The same camouflage that helps protect against predators, is also hurting nesting birds and chicks with respect to humans. Human beach-goers are, for the most part, simply unaware of their avian counterparts. As a result, chicks and eggs are too often crushed by unwitting humans.

Bird stewards can make a difference however.  And you get to spend time at the beach. Interested volunteers can attend a special training workshop in Marineland on April 4, from 8-11:30 a.m. at 9601 Oceanshore Blvd., and learn to become a bird steward.

“Workshop participants will learn how to post signs at important nest areas and to educate beach-goers, to help protect the birds, their eggs and young from being disturbed,” said Monique Borboen of Audubon of Florida. “Stewards can also participate in the bird-monitoring program; you don’t need to be highly skilled in bird identification to join the network and help protect our region’s nesting birds.”

For more information or to register for the workshop, contact Monique Borboen at 904-813-5115.
