Audubon Concerned That Lost Tree Developers Aren't Relocating Gopher tortoises

Developers of John’s Island have started clearing land for Lost Tree Preserve, a 215-acre community northwest of 65th Street and Old Dixie Highway in Indian River County.

They didn’t relocate any gopher tortoises or initially count scrub jay nests, which prompted members of the Pelican Island Audubon Society to work with Indian River County officials to develop local laws requiring tortoises be relocated.

Ecologist David Cox, on the society’s board of directors, said he is researching how other counties preserve gopher tortoises.

“We would have taken care of” getting volunteers to help relocate them, he said.
