West Pasco Audubon President Peter Day has made it his personal mission to spread the word about the 15,000 - 30,000 migrating shorebirds shot each fall in the managed shooting swamps on Barbados. The 11 species of shorebirds hunted on Barbados have all been reported in Pasco County either as uncommon or occasional visitors in small numbers. They include the American Golden Plover, a species of special concern. Peter hopes to raise $50,000 to support the work of BirdLife International on the island for a further year.  The objective is to introduce bag limits, ban the use of taped calls to lure the birds, and stop the shooting of endangered species. His chapter has committed $300 so far. For more information or to find out how you can add your support please contact Peter (West Pasco Audubon, PO Box 1456, Elfers, FL, 34680).
