Waste Not, Want Not: Reducing America's Food Waste Reduces the Need for More Oil

A recent study indicates that Americans waste almost 40% of their food supply. This translates to roughly 300 million barrels of oil wasted and squandered a year. And those 300 million barrels only include fertilizing, growing, processing, and transporting the lost foodstuffs. Certainly additional energy is expended in hauling off, processing, and dealing with the waste. I know it seems crazy, but if, as a nation, we were a little more cognizant of our habits, we could preclude the need to, say, drill for oil off of Florida's shores. 300 million barrels a year is significantly more than we could ever possibly hope to drill in Florida's waters. Conservation and efficiency are the keys to dealing with America's future energy needs - even at the dinner table.
