— MIAMI – Late yesterday, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio announced his objections to the Kendall Parkway expressway in light of the upcoming project review. Audubon Florida Everglades Policy Director Celeste De Palma released the following statement:
— After urging by Audubon, the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) released a report approving the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA) Reservoir. This allows Congress to include this critical Everglades project in the 2018 Water Resources Development Act, currently under consideration in the U.S Senate.
— Today, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that they are raising water levels in the L-29 canal in South Miami-Dade County to the maximum allowable level of 8.0 feet. This move, long in the making, allows water to flow under the Tamiami Trail 1-mile bridge as intended by Everglades restoration.
— Earlier today, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled in favor of Florida in the long dispute regarding Georgia’s over-consumption of water that severely threatened the health of the Apalachicola River watershed and estuary.
— MAITLAND, Fla. - This morning, Audubon Center for Birds of Prey experts and special guests released the 600th rehabilitated Bald Eagle back into the Florida skies at 11 a.m. at Maitland Middle School. The eagle was rescued on March 11, 2018 by Audubon.
— Today, Audubon Florida announced Buck Island Ranch as the recipient of the 2018 “Sustainable Rancher of the Year” award. A 10,500-acre cattle ranch, Buck Island is part of Archbold Biological Station located in Highlands County, Florida.
— The National Wildlife Refuge Association is pleased to announce that we have named Celeste De Palma as our first ever National Wildlife Refuge System Advocate of the Year. Ms. De Palma is the Director of Everglades Policy at Audubon Florida and was instrumental in mobilizing her community to help stop the licensing revocation of the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge.
