A bill filed yesterday by Congressman Curt Clawson (R-FL) allows the U.S. Department of the Interior to identify and acquire land south of Lake Okeechobee for water storage, treatment, and conveyance. Audubon and our partners have called for acquiring land for an Everglades Agricultural Area reservoir as part of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP).
“Congressman Clawson recognizes the importance of storing more water south of Lake Okeechobee,” said Julie Hill-Gabriel, Audubon’s Director of Everglades Policy. “By identifying land needed for water storage, plans can more quickly be developed to reconnect water flows from Lake Okeechobee to the southern Everglades and Florida Bay.”
